QUASAR DISCOVERY COULD SPARK OTHER SPACE FINDS, HANS-JURGEN
HAGEN SAYS

HAMBURG (JULY 9) DPA - Following the spotting last month of
the ''brightest object in the universe'', a quasar, new
space finds are expected, astronomist Hans-Jurgen Hagen said
Tuesday.

Hagen, who discovered quasar HS 1946''7658 on a photographic
plate taken in 1986 said a computer programme has been
developed over the past few months to evaluate the shots,
with ten per cent of the process having been so far carried
out.

The light straying from the quasar was located by
astronomists using a telescope at an observatory in the
Calar Alto mountains near Almeria in Spain.  The light from
the object which is 10,000 times brighter than the brightest
known galaxy took ten billion years to reach the earth.

It is not exactly known what quasars are. First discovered
30 years ago, experts believe they are the centres of
galaxies. By studying these phenomena more closely,
scientists hope to find out more about the origin of our
universe.

According to the director of Hamburg's observatory,
Professor Dieter Riemers, German scientists hope the Hubble
telescope programme will be able to incorporate closer
research of the quasar into its own observation programme.

First priority is, however, to set off in search of other
quasars to provide more material for the research programme.
