Subject: Artifacts on the Moon and Mars 

(INPUT 001)

Mr. Byron Carpedium, in a 'letter to the Editor' in the 'LEADING EDGE',
dated February 18, 1990 presented some remarkable claims which we quote
in entirety below:

"Dear Editor... As more and more information is beginning to surface
concerning UFOs, super-technology, 'alien' cultures, abductions,
multi-level coverups and conspiracies I see many different people trying
to assemble data to get, or give, a better picture of what is really
happening around us.

Individually I do not believe that any ONE of us can gather ALL the
facts, assemble them and expose it in a way that is palatable to Joe
Citizen.  COLLECTIVELY, however, I think that we can make an impact by
increasing the total awareness of the entire population.  This does not
have to happen over a period of 10 or 20 years as would be done in a
gradual acclimation program.  It can be done in a relatively short period
of time, if the proper steps are taken.  Once the awareness or awakening
process is complete, the individual must then decide whether or not to
believe the information and the source of that information.  Then the
individual MUST act upon it in some form or fashion.

"The latter two steps can be done more efficiently in many ways.  One
possibility is to take some item or fact that most everyone agrees upon
and then impart some new information about it to those interested about
it.  For example, if anyone saw the John Lear lectures in Houston last
year or has seen the video tape, you saw Lear ask three questions at the
beginning of the lecture: the third being 'How many of you think that
Oswald shot Kennedy?'  Naturally only a handful of people raised their
hand. By this time Lear has gained the trust of his audience and has most
everyone in agreement.  Then he does not tell the audience, but instead
shows the audience the Zapruder film showing W. Greer shooting the
President.  After this, convincing the audience of the rest is simple.

"The pieces are coming out now and need to be put together. Bill Cooper
has gone several steps beyond Lear by tying things together on a global
scale.  Recently people with direct access to inside information are now
corroborating what other researchers have long suspected.

"Evidence suggesting a secret project to fly 'alien' vehicles in Nevada
to alien/Us/Soviet bases and operations on the moon are now some of the
hot topics amongst UFOlogists and researchers.  These are, for most
people, ideas that are so far out that they cannot be believed.  One of
the reasons, I believe, for this attitude is the fact that VERY few
people have ever researched anything having to do with the U.S. OFFICIAL
space program, NASA, and it's relationship to the UFO coverup.  If
researchers, authors, lecturers, etc., would take the time to point out
where NASA has suppressed, hidden and simply lied about information
dealing with the U.S. space program people may consider these esoteric
ideas more believable based on their new knowledge that the U.S. space
program is not what it appears to be.

"MOONGATE by William Brian II is a good place to start. After that you
can talk to people at NASA.  Specifically people connected with the
Department of Defense (DOD) missions.  Many of these people, if willing
to talk, will paint a very different picture of what is happening with
OUR space program (remember, it is a civilian operation right???  Well,
if you think it is, you had better look again.)

"NASA was created on October 1, 1958.  The main reason for NASA's
creation was to capitalize on the military potential of space.  A
secondary reason was so that large sums of money may be diverted into
'black' projects which the public was to have no knowledge about.  The
plan was simple and quite easily accomplished.  Money and manufactured
items for top-secret or black projects can readily be allocated if they
are hidden within our unclassified projects.  Contractors and
Subcontractors brought in by NASA have no idea where the money goes, what
the parts they design and manufacture are really for and they almost
never see the end project or result because everything is so
compartmentalized at NASA.

"I am still in the process of gathering, verifying, and assembling this
information so naturally I am interested in finding others who may be
able to support or refute any of my findings.  The following list of
facts I have learned from several individuals who are working or who have
worked or been linked with NASA in some way over the years.  For obvious
reasons I will not now use their real names.  The list below represents
some of the information from three people: one is currently working in
DOD missions for NASA; another started working with NASA & DOD when JSC
(Johnson Space Center) was built.  He 'committed suicide' after the Space
Shuttle Challenger was destroyed.

"The third is a scientist who has worked at NASA and other facilities.
His work with Edward Teller (i.e. the inventor of the H-Bomb and alleged
member of MJ-12 - Branton) is what is most known about this man:

"* There are buildings on the Moon.

 "* There is mining equipment on the Moon.

 "* Photos, NASA photos, do exist which clearly show both of these.

"* Hundreds, but probably thousands, of NASA photos have been tampered
with.  Specifically, by careful use of an airbrush, flying saucers and
other UFOs can be removed, and then the photo is released to the public
and/or press.

 "* Film taken by astronauts clearly show UFOs, IFOs, Alien Vehicles,
 "* etc.

 "* The NSA screens all photos before release to the public.

"* Everything that NASA has launched has been closely monitored by at
least one 'alien' culture.

"* NASA knew about 'alien' activity on the Moon before Armstrong, Aldrin,
and Collins ever set foot on it.

"* Edwin Aldrin at one point found evidence that we were NOT THE FIRST to
arrive on the moon.  After first seeing and then taking photographs of
footprints in the lunar soil he then saw the beings that made the
footprints (the report and transcripts of conversations between the
astronauts were not clear if Aldrin had physical and/or mental contact
with the entities).

"* Analysis of the footprint photos indicated that the beings that made
them would have weighed (on Earth) 300-350 lbs. and would stand at least
seven feet tall (which supported Aldrin's account).

"* Alien Vehicles flew within 50 feet of a U.S. space vehicle for one
full Earth orbit and then the AV departed; again while Aldrin was
present.

"* 'Buzz' Aldrin had a nervous breakdown because of these events and the
pressure not to talk.

"* During the last successful mission before the Challenger disaster,
NASA and the astronauts on board were warned directly by ETs of the
impending dangers of space that they would meet (I have more details from
multiple sources but still need confirmation on a few details.  Do you
know anything about this one?) [Note: Certain 'Ham' radio operators have
allegedly recorded conversations from 'classified' frequencies between a
Space Shuttle astronaut and Mission Control, making reference  to an
'Alien Craft' which was following the Shuttle.  Whether this story is
legitimate or not remains to be seen - Branton].

 "* There have been 22 deaths (many 'suicides') at JSC in Houston.

"* The Space Station project is non-existent.  It is a lie and will never
be built.  In reality the project is called the Space City.

"* No astronaut who has seen AVs or ETs is allowed to talk about it, even
amongst themselves.  If they do and are caught they may be fined,
publicly humiliated, imprisoned, or have all pensions and future salaries
taken away.

"* Voyager has been disabled.  The pictures received from Neptune in
September of 1989 were not from the probe.

"* Galileo has been put out of commission and will not be allowed to
complete its mission (For those who have read the section on Bill
'Cooper', they will recall his allegation that the Secret Government
loaded Galileo with plutonium which they intended to use to ignite the
hydrogenic 'atmosphere' of Jupiter and thus create a nuclear reaction
which would theoretically convert it into a small 'sun'.  If Cooper's and
Carpedium's sources are correct, then NO WONDER an 'alien' race with
possible bases on the Jovian moons would 'disable' such a presumptuous
undertaking! - Branton).  The information being received from the probe
indicating it's successful function is a deception by the 'aliens.'

"* NASA is a joke (i.e. in the words of one of the 'informants'.)..."

Brad Steiger, in his book (co-authored by Joan Whritenour) 'FLYING
SAUCERS ARE HOSTILE' (Award Books, N.Y.  1967.  pp. 132- 133) relates the
following concerning NASA's discovery of strange artifacts on the Moon:

"...On November 22, 1966, a photograph of the moon taken by the Boeing
Lunar Orbiter 2 showed strange spires which had never been seen before.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration released the
information that the seven-hundred- fifty by five-hundred-foot area had
six protuberances, the largest of which was estimated at between forty
and seventy-five feet high and about fifty feet wide at its base.

"'ONE LOOKS LIKE THE GEORGE WASHINGTON MONUMENT,' said a spokesman for
Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California (Note: Such
'obelisks' of this same configuration played a major part in ancient
Babylonian and Egyptian civilizations, and signified the Tower of Babel
and man's desire to 'conquer' the heavens.  Could there be any
connection? - Branton).  'Some of the smaller ones look like upside down
ice-cream cones.  There are small white dots which cast rather lengthy
shadows.  In one photo frame there is this one, very tall pinnacle and
four shorter ones.  They appear almost like antenna array.'

"NASA refused to comment on what the presence of this 'antenna array'
might mean to our own effort to reach the moon or to our national
security.

"If the strange spires are indeed antenna towers, then this construction
constitutes physical evidence that intelligent life has been at work on
the surface of the moon.  It is, of course, impossible to conceive of
life as we know it subsisting on the craggy lunar surface, devoid of
water, vegetation, and breathable atmosphere, but a great number of
scientists, down through the ages, have speculated that the earth's
satellite may at one time have been habitable.  And cartoonist Chester
Gould, who has his Dick Tracy acquire his daughter-in-law from a race of
moon people, was not the first man to consider that moon men and maidens
may have learned to survive in natural or artificial caverns deep within
the moon.

"During the summer of 1964, Ranger 7 returned four-thousand-
three-hundred-twenty pictures of the moon's surface.  Some of these
pictures showed two large white objects which had never been seen before.
Harvard University's magazine, SKY AND TELESCOPE, reported that Ranger
7's pictures showed OVER TWO HUNDRED of these 'moon domes.'  Such domes
appear to be artificial constructions and are certainly not the natural
configurations of the moon's craggy surface.  French astronomers were
laughed at when they seriously suggested that the domes could be space
bases...

"On January 13, 1967, thirty-three new pictures from Lunar 2 were
released in Washington.  One photo, which covers an area of thousands of
square miles, shows a fantastic array of domes which appear to be a
thousand to a thousand-five-hundred feet high and then two to ten miles
in diameter..."

In 1976 the Viking Orbiter 1, on its 35th orbit, photographed what was
later to become one of the most controversial features on the Martian
surface, the so-called 'face' or 'sphinx'.  Almost three years later the
picture of the 'Face' came under intense scrutiny by interested persons.
A complex system of 'pyramids' was found nearby and a multi-sided
'pyramid' was also discovered.  Although many contend that the objects
were of natural origin, others claimed that calculations showed that the
'face' and 'pyramids' were aligned mathematically.  Further calculations
showed that the complex of 'pyramids' appeared to be crosshair-sight
aligned over the 'face'.  Calculations showed that the alignment from the
'pyramid' complex across the 'face' perfectly lined up with the sunrise
of the Martian solstice as it was several thousand years ago.  Richard
Hoagland's book, 'THE MONUMENTS OF MARS - A CITY ON THE EDGE OF FOREVER'
(1987), takes 530 pages to cover all the details and calculation
involving the 'face' and 'pyramids'. Hoagland links the Mars 'face' to
the Pyramids and the Sphinx in ancient Egypt.  One of the 'coincidences'
Hoagland uncovers is the relationship between Mars and Cairo.  Cairo,
which he identifies as the home of the Great Pyramids, was once called
El- Kahir, Arabic for 'Mars'.  Although some prominent researchers and
scientists attribute 'the face' and the 'pyramids' to natural erosion,
others like Hoagland believe that they represent evidence of intelligent
activity.  Although it is very doubtful that an atmosphere sufficient to
support human life exists on Mars at this time, there are some who
believe that perhaps a few thousand years ago it did so, before a massive
cataclysm swept through the solar system.  Velikovsky, in his book
'WORLDS IN COLLISION', for instance suggests that: '...The Moon was
repeatedly involved in solar-system catastrophes in THE FIRST TWO
MILLENNIA B.C. which damaged it and displaced it from its orbit..."

In 1990 'THE LEADING EDGE' released the following information under the
title heading 'MARS PHOBOS':

"...When the Soviets released the news that all contact had been lost
with the Phobos 1 spacecraft as it neared Phobos, the Martian Moon, due
(they said) to a 'blunder' made by one of their technicians at Mission
Control; A BBC NEWSFLASH STATED THAT phobos 1 had encountered 'something'
and all communication had ceased therewith.  What 'it' was they did not
say, and the world waited with baited breath, anticipating the
revelations that the second spacecraft - Phobos 2 might unveil.

"On the 16th of March, 1989, the announcement that Phobos 2 had also
failed was received with much bewilderment and, to some people, was just
too much to swallow.  Not another human error, surely?  At a cost of 400
million (pounds), what could have gone wrong with the spot-on wizardry of
the slick computerized technology?  Either they were withholding news
because they had found something they could not, or would not
understand... or... did the months of silence that followed really mean
that the project had indeed become a dead loss and there was absolutely
nothing to report?

"Therefore it came as a surprise, four months later, on the 21st of July,
1989, when an ITV news item spoke of pictures transmitted by the Phobos
spacecraft that had certainly knocked the stuffing out of the Soviet
scientists and rendered them speechless.  As it homed in on the Martian
Moon, the pictures showed something coming towards Phobos 1 which, the
scientists said, should not have been there.  Was it an immigration
Control - boarding party... or an intercept to investigate intruders into
Martian airspace?  One can only speculate because the Soviets aren't
saying what it is.

"One of the pictures shown during the newscast had really stumped the
scientists and sent them all into a dither, overturning all their
previous conceptions of Mars.  it showed a near-view of the surface of
Mars with a truly gigantic oval shadow cast onto the ground.  This view
was not from any land feature... but from an object in the air... and it
wasn't from the Phobos craft!  The pictures - which at that time only one
British scientist had seen, showed symmetrical lines near the equator and
other structures.  His first reaction was that he was looking at an
aerial view of Los Angeles.  This picture was going to be one of the main
points of discussion at the forthcoming international conference.

"The Sixth International Conference of the ASSOCIATION OF GEOPHYSICS AND
ASTRONOMY was held at Exeter University on 26th July, 1986 and attended
by the Russian space experts, Dr. Oleg Vaisberg, Director of the Space
Research Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and Dr. Aleksander
Zakharov, its Chief Scientific Secretary.  They said that the Phobos
craft had sent thousands of pictures of Mars back to Earth before its
transmitter failed.  New information about the atmosphere and magnetic
fields of both Mars and Phobos and structures that were once thought to
be canals would require scientists to have a re- think.  Although some of
the Martian atmosphere is being lost in space, somehow it is being
regenerated and this is just one of the many puzzles that have to be
solved."

The following submitted article allegedly appeared in 'SOVIET LIFE'
magazine under the title; 'AMAZING CLAIM:'

"A Soviet scientist who defected to the West said photographs taken by an
orbiting satellite clearly show the ruined temples of a long-dead
civilization - on the planet Mars!

"And laser probes made by the secret Russian satellite revealed that the
ruins littering the planet's surface ARE INCREDIBLY YOUNG by space-time
standards (i.e. a few thousand years or less!? - Branton).

"The 58-year-old scientist was a high-echelon member of an elite team
that has worked together since 1961 when Vostok 1 carried Yuri A. Gagarin
as the first man in space.

"But Russia's growing emphasis on the development of a nuclearized 'Star
Wars' satellite system in space prompted him to flee Russia.  He now
lives under an assumed identity somewhere in Switzerland."

The following is from an 'add' introduction for Richard C. Hoagland's
book 'THE MONUMENTS OF MARS: A CITY ON THE EDGE OF FOREVER':

"In 1976, NASA sent four Viking spacecraft to Mars, to photograph the
planet and to set landers on its surface to test for the presence of
life.  On July 25, as part of the mapping sequence to select a suitable
landing site, one of the orbiters photographed a peculiar-looking mesa
resembling a human face a mile long.  At the time the facial resemblance
was dismissed by NASA as a trick of light and shadow.  However, three
years later, two computer scientists, Vince DiPietro and Gregory
Molenaar, rediscovered the photograph in the National Space Science Data
Center.

"Richard C. Hoagland, former Science Advisor to Walter Cronkite and CBS
News, consultant for Cable News Network, and Editor of STAR AND SKY, was
a member of the NASA press corps on that memorable day in July and is now
in the forefront of the Mars investigation.  Through careful analysis of
a variety of photographs of the Cydonia region (in which the 'face'
resides) and consultation with scientists and other professionals, he
discovered the presence of other monuments and structures, including what
is possibly an underground city in the style of Paolo Soleri's
arcologies, plus a series of regular relationships and symmetries among
the artifacts.

"In a wide-ranging and profound analysis of the 'Mars data,' Hoagland
explains the importance of the 'face' and its implication regarding not
only the past but future of the human species.  As he himself writes: 'I
realized I was looking at something that was either a complete waste of
time, or the most important discovery of the twentieth century...  There
is no middle ground.  It either is or is not artificial... If it is, it
is imperative that we figure it out because... IT DOES NOT BELONG THERE.
Its presence, if it was made by someone, is trying very hard to tell us
something extraordinary.'

"Does the 'face' summon us to Mars?  Why is it OUR face? Why has NASA
denied the existence of the artifact?  What are the political
implications of a Soviet-U.S. manned mission to Cydonia?  Who were the
'Martians?'  How does the existence of the 'face' change our entire
history?

"The 30 SCIENTISTS, known as the Mars Investigation Group, think two
photographs sent back from Mars in 1976 by the Viking space-probe
indicate the existence of an ancient civilization, said Richard Hoagland,
group member and science writer.

"The photos show what appear to be four huge PYRAMIDS lined up
symmetrically with the face about 6 miles away, suggesting a parallel
with Stonehenge, the ancient monument of huge stones in England, Hoagland
said Thursday.

"'Geometrically, the face could be seen in profile [from the pyramids] as
the summer solstice sun rose over it.'

"...Dr. C. West Churchman, a professor at the University of California at
Berkeley and the group's principal investigator, said there are too many
details pointing to the possibility of an extinct (? - Branton) Martian
race.

"'It's hard to believe that all that symmetry could have been done by
winds and sand as we know it on Earth,' he said. 'If it had just been the
face, I would not have been that convinced.  But the fact that these
[pyramids] are lined up in a certain way with the face makes me inclined
to believe that there was an ancient civilization.'

"The two Viking photographs were taken AT DIFFERENT TIMES of day,
reducing the chance that the figures were illusions cast by tricky
shadows, Hoagland said.

"The face, 1 mile long and 1 mile wide, appears to be looking toward the
stars, he said."

The following is from a review of Fred Steckling's 191 page book, 'WE
DISCOVERED ALIEN BASES ON THE MOON':

"WE DISCOVERED ALIEN BASES ON THE MOON deserves avid study, and not just
by ufologists.  In an era of Watergate and the IRAN/CONTRA scandals, plus
rigorous revelation of facts on government UFO cover-up--excellently
documented in such books as CLEAR INTENT, and the British SKYCRASH which
investigates a landing in England--one doesn't have to be paranoid to
believe that someone [or several officials] in our government knows for a
fact that there are alien bases on the moon and isn't telling the Senate
or House of Representatives.

"'Where there's smoke, there's fire,' goes the old saying-- and as far as
substantive UFO evidence is concerned, if the excellently documented
information already on record is the smoke, then ALIEN BASES ON THE MOON
is the fire--and a bonfire it is at that.  With all the pressure
ufologists and others are exerting on Congress to bring about a frank and
non-deceptive public approach to UFOs, some of these NASA photos seem
deserving of serious consideration as a prime exhibit in the case.

"Have you considered the possibility that our Apollo Lunar missions might
have discovered overwhelming evidence that an intelligent species has
bases on the moon--and that NASA has released its proof publicly, while
making no comment on it whatsoever?

"It's been more than a decade since there have been any
publicly-announced moon missions.  Have you considered that perhaps the
U.S. HAS CONTINUED THE MOON FLIGHTS--though not launched from Cape
Canaveral--and that what used to be shared publicly is now all done in
secret?

"WE DISCOVERED ALIEN BASES ON THE MOON is a fascinating book--in it,
author Fred Steckling has examined these issues and more: the likelihood
that in spite of what we all grew up taking for granted about the moon
(that it's an airless, waterless wasteland), the Apollo missions have
brought back strong photographic evidence of lakes on the moon, an
atmosphere that supports some clouds and even fern-like vegetation in
some regions.

"To support his premise, Steckling has published 125 carefully annotated,
unclassified NASA Apollo photos of the moon, most taken by Apollo lunar
orbiters.

"Here's what you'll see: holes shaped like squares and rectangles,
perfect Latin crosses etched at various places on the lunar surface,
large triangle shapes, luminous regions that look identical to lakes and
reservoirs (as photographed from high above the earth), apparent
platforms with sharp right angles, the letter 'S' formed on the surface
with unflawed symmetry and straight-lined protrusions from the moon's
surface that have smooth, domed-shaped tops that strongly suggest the
shape of storage tanks.

"You'll also see strong evidence of clouds, a color photo suggesting
green vegetation, apparent mining activities, tread tracks and many UFOs
floating above the lunar surface--most of them casting shadows.

"In reading WE DISCOVERED ALIEN BASES ON THE MOON, pay particular
attention to NASA photos that are reproduced as plates 23, 24, 25, 42 and
43 (color photos suggesting vegetation); 61, 53, 54 (triangular lakes);
57, 57A, 58 (more lakes, some laid out in perfect squares); 61 (apparent
artificial installations); 62 and 63 (clouds); 71A (a cigar-shaped flying
object); 88, 89 (even, symmetrical white crosses etched on the lunar
ground); 99 (the cover photo of a distinct cigar-shaped flying object);
121 (the letter 'S,' looking like a symbol very intentionally put there);
143 (one of the best photos of all--a perfectly square pit on the moon);
144 (possibly a machine digging lunar dust out of a crater) [Note:
According to George Leonard, author of SOMEBODY ELSE IS ON THE MOON,
these giant 'X-drones' which look like huge 'crossed' worms can be
seen--in several photos in his book--carving up crater rims and spraying
dust; these 'mining' drones are well known to the government, according
to an anonymous ex-NASA employee who was one of the sources for Leonard's
book - Branton]; 148 and 149 (extremely convincing photos taken by Apollo
16, showing apparent lunar storage tanks).

"Steckling is very puzzled (and so will his readers be) as to why NASA
released these photos as 'unclassified.'  Could it be that NASA had NOT
studied them carefully at the time they were cleared for public access?
Steckling feels sure the government MUST have checked out this evidence
on unpublicized lunar trips-- or perhaps it was investigated on some of
the lunar expeditions we know about, but the findings are being
withheld."
