REFLECTIONS ON ALLEGED ALIEN ABDUCTIONS AND DISINFORMATION
DEFINITION: Abductionism is the belief system which describes the
human-extraterrestrial relationship within the context of an alleged
criminal act; that is the forceful taking of a human subject against
his/her will by non-terrestrial beings (almost always described as
non-human aliens), to a secure and isolated location where forced
interactions take place between the human subject and the ETs.
This belief system in the West has taken on the force of an ideology
within the sub-culture of ufology which is sometimes referred to by CSETI
as the "UFO ghetto". This ideology is propelled by self styled UFO
investigators, (abductionists), who have taken the subjective accounts of
alleged victims of ET.-human interactions and proclaimed these bizarre
stories as virtual fact. Many of the most prominent abductionists are not
licensed health professionals and they heavily rely on the somewhat
dubious technique of hypnotic regression to elicit frightening tales of
supposed physical, psychological and yes even sexual abuse at the hands of
alien visitors.
Abductionists have used the growing number of reported human-ET
interactions, which include sightings of ET craft and ET beings, plus
actual on board experiences, to promote a biased, fear based, xenophobic,
negativistic and possibly even racist interpretation of those events. In
this critique of abductionism we should be careful to acknowledge that
the atmosphere of routine denial and ridicule that has surrounded the
human-ET relationship for the most part has been successful in preventing
a more rational, scientific and sober assessment of the phenomenon. The
scientific establishment has even refused to simply recognize the body of
evidence demonstrating Extraterrestrial Intelligence's presence on earth,
let alone study it in any systematic way. The mainstream responsible
media, both print and electronic, have largely ignored the phenomenon of
ET spacecraft and their crews visiting earth. They have left this
important subject to the exclusive purview of the tabloids, whose
sensationalized coverage and lurid accounts of alleged abductions then
only serve to discourage more responsible journalists from addressing the
subject at all.
CSETI's position within the growing debate on so called "alien"
abductions is a complex one. On one hand we have employed effective
contact protocols to create verifiable and reproducible interactive
experiences with the ET visitors, thus once again "proving" their
existence. This claim from a skeptic's point of view would seem to place
us within firmly within the flying saucer subculture as so called "UFO
believers." On the other hand CSETI refuses to embrace the abductionists'
mythology which we assert dooms its proponents to a totally hopeless and
negative perspective visa vie the ET visitors, and which ignores any
potential benefit humanity may derive from contact with advanced
Extraterrestrial civilizations.
In a related area of controversy, CSETI's approach to government secrecy
is also multi-faceted. We have attempted to establish dialogue with
responsible and informed officials to encourage them to help open up this
issue to US and world citizenry. This is embodied in CSETI's Project
Starlight. Although we are critical of the excessive government secrecy
that has surrounded the evidence that we are being visited by
Extraterrestrials, we have refused to label these secrecy efforts as a
cover-up. The term cover-up implies some criminal activity has occurred
and making such an accusation only serves to push further into the corner
those more enlightened government leaders who may wish, as we do, to move
to a more open relationship with the ETs.
Within the sub-culture of ufology this is not always the case. The most
extreme accusations of military and intelligence service criminal
misconduct, usually made without a shred of reliable information or
justification, have become the mainstay of prominent myth makers within
the UFO ghetto. Unfortunately government imposed secrecy on this subject
only reinforces the wild speculation and invective which run rampant
among the saucer enthusiasts and some of their less responsible leaders.
This sorry situation becomes even more complicated because of the likely
presence of government intelligence agents within organizations
ufological. Their existence and operations can not be easily proved,
(this after all is the nature of clandestine intelligence work),
nevertheless in a field so central to perceived national security issues,
it would be naive to think that Select Sections of the Intelligence
Services (SSIS), would be absent. Presumed members of the SSIS, or the
SSISIies for short, (please excuse by barb hurled at the macho esprit de
corps of secret agents), would be expected to carry out disinformation
projects against UFO researchers and groups. Hiding behind a screen of
anonymity and posing as "confidential sources" such SSISies would be free
to peddle the bizarre rumors and phony pictures and documents so
prevalent in the flying saucer field.
It is even conceivable that some of the more wild tales of government
liaison with the ETs could actually be instigated by contract
intelligence agents themselves. This proposition of liaison asserts that
in exchange for alien spacecraft that are presumably being tested at
secret Air Force bases like "Area 51", intelligence officers have
knowingly permitted the ETs to forcibly abduct human subjects from their
homes. This outrageously insulting dibble is too often heard from
featured speakers at UFO conferences and is repeated in many of the
tabloid style journals supported by the UFO sub- culture. The preverse
privilege of abducting humans in exchange for alien technology is
referred to as the granting of "grazing rights". The thought that such a
diabolical betrayal, if discovered by the public, would likely lead to
court marshal and probable death sentences for the officers involved,
doesn't phase some wild eyed conspiracy junkies of the abductionist
faith. Please take note of the fact that such sick notions would
probably insult every American who has ever taken pride in the heroism
and sacrifices of our Armed Forces since the founding of our nation. Why
would Select Sections of the Intelligence Services, possibly operating
under a Black Budget multi-disciplinary grouping, want to promote such
seemingly demented disinformation? One possible explanation is that by
facilitating the expression of such nonsense in ufological circles, the
entire field will be forever branded by the public as incurably kooky,
unpatriotic and not to be listened to. This might help insure that much
of the well researched and accurate evidence confirming the
extraterrestrials' presence will be overlooked forever by journalists,
scientists and the sober man in the street. It would contribute to the
largely successful secrecy campaign which continues to this present day.
