  DISCOVERIES

  Revelations are taking place all over the world as discoveries are
  made in South America, France, Asia-discoveries so amazing that they
  force us to re-examine what concerns us most deeply: the origin and
  destiny of man.

  The thesis we are presenting can be summarized as follows:

  A very ancient civilization preceded ours. After having developed
  radio, television, interplanetary rockets and the hydrogen bomb, it
  disappeared in a nuclear catastrophe.

  Before they died, knowing that a certain number of survivors would
  continue the human adventure, our ancestors left a message intended to
  preserve future generations from their own disastrous experience:
  "Beware of science. Beware of fire."

  Now that man is about to venture to other planets, and weapons capable
  of wiping out life on earth are already being manufactured, it is
  vitally important to study the meaning of that message.

  The first few lines of the Bible contain: 1) an account of the
  creation of the world that is in perfect agreement with the data of
  modern cosmogony; and 2) the assertion that man fell because he
  acquired knowledge.

  How are we to explain the fact that men living a thousand years before
  Christ knew about geological eras and the creation of nature, from
  minerals to plants, and from plants to animals?

  And how were those men able to realize that science (knowledge) means
  danger of death, something that has become clear to us only recently?

  Traditional religion answers that these things were revealed by God.
  For those  who believe in a God who speaks, thunders, rewards and
  punishes, it is an adequate explanation. But those who believe in a
  more universal God, or no God at all, require a more rational
  explanation.

  The Bible is not the only book: The Talmud, the Vedas, most other
  sacred writings and many folk legends also abound in previously
  misunderstood messages which seem to indicate that thousands or even
  millions of years ago there were human civilizations, terrestrial or
  extraterrestrial, which developed powers and scientific technologies
  that we have not yet equaled.

  Many messages from the past, in the form of buildings, monuments and
  books, have been destroyed by time, but men have striven to keep some
  of them in existence, rebuilding structures on the verge of collapse,
  restoring a stone here, an illegible word there.

  A large part of the legacy has crumbled into dust. What remains has
  often lost its original meaning. Its identity as a message,
  Futhermore, inertia and fear have often prevented men from accepting a
  startling truth.

  Yet, the truth is now welling up to safeguard us and prove the reality
  of vanished civilizations.

  Some scientists have come to regard the existence of those
  civilizations as certain, rather than hypothetical. We have gathered
  the evidence, clues, discoveries and known facts that support this new
  view of human history.

  By rashness or accident, we may fall into error. No single step can
  reach the end of the awesome road that stretches beyond our knowledge
  and our known ancestors, beyond our knowledge and our known ancestors,
  beyond the Gauls, the Greeks, the Sumerians, the Egyptians and
  Cro-Magnon man, toward civilizations whose heritage has come down to
  us without our being aware of them.

  But the first step must still be taken, small though it may be.
